뇌의 기능은 아직도 많은 것이 밝혀지지 않은 것이 많은, 신비롭고도 동시에 21세기 생명 과학에서의 중요한 도전의 대상 중에 하나라고 할 수 있다. 뇌의 이러한 복잡한 기능에 중요한 인자로 작용하는 것 중의 대표적인 것이 바로 신경전달물질이라고 할 수 있다. 특정 신경세포에서 만들어져 분비되는 신경전달 물질은 그 수용체를 통하여 여러 가지 신호를 전달하고 또한 다른 신경전달 물질, 혹은 다른 단백질들과의 상호작용을 통하여 결국 고유의 생리적 기능으로 이어진다고 할 수 있다. 이러한 과정에서의 생길 수 있는 여러 가지 생물학적인 문제점은 바로 신경질환으로 이어진다고 할 수 있다.
우리가 잘 알고 있는 정신 분열증, 치매, 우울증, 파킨슨 증후군, 스트레스 등의 신경정신 질환은 물론 비만과 같은 대사성 질환 등도 이러한 신경전달 물질들의 비 정상적인 조절에서 비롯된 것이라는 것은 이제 잘 알려진 사실이다. 본 연구실에서는 이렇게 뇌의 기능에 중요한 역할을 하는 신경전달 물질, 신경 펩타이드 등의 분자적, 세포적인 측면에서의 신호전달을 연구하고 또한 동물모델을 이용하여 궁극적으로는 중요한 뇌 질환의 표적을 찾는 연구를 수행하고 있다.

저희 연구실은 신경전달물질과 호르몬의 수용체를 중심으로 생리적인 기능과 신호전달기전 등을 분자적, 세포적인 측면에서 분석하고 있습니다. 그 중에서도 G protein-coupled receptor family에 속하는 운동기능 및 여러 가지 신경생리기능에 관여하는 도파민의 수용체중 대표적인 그룹인 도파민 D2 수용체와, 중추신경계에서 비만 관련신호전달에 중요한 역할을 하는 멜라노코틴 MC3R/MC4R 수용체에 초점을 맞추어 다음과 같은 연구를 진행하고 있습니다.
• 약물중독 및 우울증에서의 도파민성 신경전달 시스템의 역할
• 음식중독 및 섭식장애에서의 도파민성 신경전달 시스템의 역할
• 광 유전학을 통한 도파민성 신경정신 질환 모델에서의 도파민성 신경회로 규명
• 도파민성 신경세포 분화에서의 도파민 D2 수용체를 통한 신호전달 기전
• 뇌의 시상하부에서의 멜라노코틴의 수용체 MC4R을 통한 비만 신호전달 기전 분석
• Wildtype과 D2R knockout 쥐의 강박적 섭식 행동 분석을 위한 Light/Dark box 실험
• 광유전학을 이용한 D2R 신경세포의 CeA-BNST 신경회로 특이적 활성 조절을 통한 충동성 조절 실험
