Program Description

Educational Objective

The School of Biosystem and Biomedical Science aims to educate students on the basics of life science, medical science, and the relevant applied sciences, and integrate one another in order to promote human health and prevent diseases. It also aims to cultivate the next generation of creative and integrated leaders who will drive the development of the cutting-edge medical/life science and bio-food industries.

Description
1. Biomedical Science 50 Acquire fundamental scientific knowledge necessary to understand phenomena involved in the maintenance of life, including molecular cell biology, biochemistry, genetics, physiology, and human pathology; explore the causes and mechanisms of diseases based on fundamental scientific knowledge; acquire new knowledge in biomedicine in order to understand disease prevention and control.
2. Bio-food and Nutrition Science 50 Acquire knowledge in practical disease control and treatment by linking fundamental life science to physiological functioning and disease; explore applied science necessary to the development and use of health-oriented food materials and new biomaterials, analyze their safety and industrialize them based on knowledge on the physical/chemical characteristics and biological function of nutritional food materials and on the broad understanding of food culture, food science, and food nutrition.

Biomedical Science
1. Disease mechanism and treatment:
Research into human anatomic structure and functional changes in order to identify the causes and mechanisms of diseases; explore basic knowledge of the growth and differentiation of various types of cells and acquire knowledge that can help diagnose and treat diseases.
2. Metabolism of diseases:
Research into substances that accelerate or restrain physiological activity involved in the maintenance of life; acquire knowledge in biological abnormalities caused by lack or excess of physiological substances in various biological tissues as well as science-based knowledge related to evaluation methods using molecular biology and protein chemistry methods that can help determine biological abnormalities.
3. Infection immunity:
Strengthen the knowledge and understanding of the occurrence of infectious diseases and the activation and enhancement of the immune system in the body; acquire basic knowledge in microorganisms necessary to diagnose infectious microbes on gene/genome levels as well as in-depth knowledge required to develop vaccines and medicines against antibiotic-resistant bacteria, new viruses, and pandemic pathogens.
4. Disease control and health promotion:
Study the fundamental concepts regarding prevention of, management of, and recovery from diseases. Furthermore, explore life scientific approach to diseases and treatments in order to find ways to maintain and promote health and acquire up-to-date knowledge required to mediate diseases.
Bio-food and Nutrition Science
1. Food and bio-safety:
For health promotion and disease prevention, acquire knowledge for ensuring product safety in food industry and bio industry. To do so, analyze biological, physical, and chemical hazards within the categories of toxicology, food chemistry, and risk assessment technology. Furthermore, propose ways to manage risks and acquire broad knowledge in risk management technology.
2. New biomaterial and cutting-edge biomedical industry:
Study the structural characteristics of various food components and their possible chemical transformations comprehensive; acquire knowledge necessary to research new food materials and apply them in industries.
3. Health ecology:
Acquire knowledge for adapting and using food and ecological environment with an aim to conduct scientific research into interactions among human, social environment, and culture; prepare to respond to the emergence of new materials, and build a system to transmit and create food culture.
