BK21 FOUR R&E Center for Chinese & Japanese Language and Literature

About Us

Greetings!

BK21 FOUR Chinese & Japanese Education Research Group at Korea University cultivates competent leaders who can pioneer the new Trans-East Asian era. We aim to nurture experts who are well-versed in the various aspects of East Asian studies, including languages, literature, culture, and the social sciences. Our goal is to promote the Trans-East Asian era and contribute to the co-existence and co-prosperity of Korea, China, and Japan, as well as other Asian countries.

Korea has long had a close relationship with China and Japan from both the geographical and the historical perspectives. The establishment of a global partnership among these three countries is indispensable not only for the benefit of each country, but also for the prosperity of the regional and the global community. In order to prepare for the new Trans-East Asian era and foster a synergistic effect, we combined the Department of Chinese L&L and the Department of Japanese L&L in 2006 and reformed the graduate program accordingly.

We successfully completed seven years of the 3rd BK21Plus project and embarked on another seven years of the BK21 FOUR project in 2020, with the motto “Trans-East Asian study and research.”

Our project has the following two goals:

I. Educating Trans-Intellectuals through Trans-Education and Trans-Research

II. Accomplishing Trans-Regional cooperation through Trans-East Asian education & research and through knowledge diffusion

The BK21 FOUR project focuses on reimagining our graduate study program and our research methodology. We are engaged in devising new integrated educational and research methods on East Asia in order to produce knowledge that helps us in preparing for the Fourth Industrial Revolution era. We also endeavor to share the outputs of our research with other members of society.

In order to achieve the above two goals, we commit to the following:

  •
  • EDUCATION: Our project focuses on innovation of the graduate study program and research methodology. We encourage students to broaden their academic interests and not to be limited to their discrete majors, through trans-disciplinary education such as code-sharing (i.e. permitting students to take any course that meets their interests and count it towards their graduation credits).
  •
  • INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE: We invigorate trans-national academic exchange by actively hosting international conferences, regularly offering talks by world-renowned scholars and experts, and providing opportunities to study and research overseas to graduate students and working professors.
  •
  • RESEARCH: We try to escape the academic methodology that is mostly initiated by Western schools. Not only do we approach the existing methodology with caution, but also attempt to develop a new research methodology that is based on Korean perspectives and spread it to the global academic community.
  •
  • SOCIAL CONTRIBUTION: We share the outputs of our research with other members of society and build a so-called “knowledge community” by publishing books for non-specialists, uploading series of lectures on East Asia on YouTube, providing lectures to local residents, and so on. In this way, knowledge can play a crucial role in solving various social issues.

Thank you very much for your interest in and support for BK21 FOUR Chinese & Japanese Education Research Group at Korea University!
