Abstract: This paper, based on the “BCC Corpus” from Beijing Language University, explores the use of the degree adverb “太” (tài) modifying verbs in Modern Chinese, specifically in the structure “太VP(了)”. The analysis covers aspects such as the structure of “VP”, semantics, function, and causes of the “太+VP” structure. Verbs and verb phrases can be modified by “太”, including mental verbs, those with the “X化” structure, relational verbs, existential verbs, and general verbs with inherent [+degree] features. The adverb “太” in “太VP(了)” mainly conveys three semantics, with “intensity” and “excess” being degree-related. The presence of the particle “了” at the end can indicate affirmative mood or modality. The “太+VP” structure is formed when the “VP” has the [+degree] feature. This feature can be inherent in the verb itself or acquired by originally lacking verbs through affixes or forming verb phrases. Additionally, when “VP” represents an event, “太” modifies it, expressing affirmation.
